Dr. Bob Kelso runs Sacred Heart Hospital with a breezy smile and a cold eye on the bottom line. Ken Jenkins plays him as the boss everyone loves to hate, revealing a little more warmth every year.
On Scrubs, Bob Kelso's story runs through Perry Cox (Rival), J.D. (Employee), Christopher Turk (Employee), Carla Espinosa (Head Nurse), and Elliot Reid (Employee).
Who is Bob Kelso?
Kelso claims he has been chief of medicine at Sacred Heart since 1985, and he treats the job as a business. He cuts costs, dodges lawsuits, and brushes off young doctors' idealism, which makes him the natural enemy of Dr. Cox, who calls him "Bobbo" and much worse.
He served as a Navy SEAL in Vietnam, graduated from Stanford's medical school in 1968, and complains constantly about his never-seen wife, Enid. His son, Harrison, is never seen either, but Kelso talks about him often and, under all the grumbling, clearly loves him.
Personality and comedy
Kelso's comedy comes from his cheerful, unapologetic selfishness. He calls Turk "Turkleton," treats other people's bad news as a minor inconvenience, and seems to enjoy delivering a cutting line with a grandfatherly smile. Ken Jenkins gives him a twinkle that makes the meanness funny instead of grim.
The show slowly reveals that the callousness is armor. Kelso has spent decades making hard decisions that someone has to make, and in rare quiet moments he tells Cox that the hospital needs both of them because they balance each other out.
Key storylines
In season seven, a birthday party Elliot throws reveals that Kelso has turned 65, the hospital's mandatory retirement age, and the board moves to push him out. Elliot and Carla rally the staff to save his job, but in "My Dumb Luck" Kelso decides to retire on his own terms anyway.
Retirement softens him. He becomes a fixture at the hospital coffee shop, helps Cox oust his unpopular successor, Dr. Taylor Maddox, and then recommends Cox for the chief's job. By season nine, after his wife's death, he is back as a professor at Winston University, the medical school built on the old Sacred Heart site.
Behind the scenes and backstory
Ken Jenkins was part of the main cast for the first eight seasons, and even after Kelso retires on screen he keeps turning up, first as a regular at the hospital coffee shop and then, in season nine, as a guest in nine of the 13 episodes.
The show fills in his history a little at a time. His Vietnam tour turns out to have left him with a son, Trong Tri; his wife, Enid, was once a nurse at the hospital; and he admits that the first patient he lost was a pregnant 19-year-old he misdiagnosed. Those glimpses are what make his rare soft moments with Cox and the younger doctors land.
