Carla Espinosa is the head nurse at Sacred Heart, the person who really knows how the hospital works and who will not hesitate to tell a doctor he is wrong. Judy Reyes plays her as opinionated, stubborn, and fiercely loyal, especially to J.D., whom she nicknames Bambi.
On Scrubs, Carla Espinosa's story runs through Christopher Turk (Husband), J.D. (Best Friend), Elliot Reid (Best Friend), Perry Cox (Friend), and Bob Kelso (Boss).
Who is Carla Espinosa?
Carla runs the nursing staff at Sacred Heart and acts as an unofficial guide and protector for each new class of interns, covering for their mistakes and sticking up for them when the attending physicians come down hard. Dr. Cox, who tolerates almost no one, openly respects her.
She was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Chicago, which does not stop Turk from repeatedly guessing she is Mexican or Puerto Rican. Her father left the family when she was a child, and she has little patience for men who do not show up for the people who count on them.
Personality and comedy
Carla is sassy, no-nonsense, and more than a little bossy, with strong opinions about how doctors, patients, and her friends' love lives should be run. Judy Reyes based the character partly on her own sister, a real-life nurse.
Her friendships are the core of her story. She is J.D.'s confidant and the one who calls him "Bambi," a nickname that sticks for the whole series. She and Elliot get off to an icy start, but they become best friends.
Key storylines
Carla agrees to a date with Turk in the second episode, and they stay together for the entire series. She hesitates over his proposal before saying yes in season two, then marries him in the season three finale, "My Best Friend's Wedding," after the church ceremony falls apart. In season four they separate for a while after Carla learns Turk has kept in touch with an ex-girlfriend, a rough patch made worse by a drunken kiss with J.D., and they work through it with counseling.
After months of trying, Carla gives birth to their daughter, Isabella, in season six, then quietly struggles with postpartum depression until Jordan helps her see it. She announces a second pregnancy in season eight.
Later years and legacy
Judy Reyes is the only original star who did not return for season nine. She is back in a recurring role in ABC's 2026 revival, where Carla is still head nurse at Sacred Heart and now the mother of four daughters.
The season eight finale offers a sweet flash-forward for Carla's family: in J.D.'s vision of the future, her daughter Isabella ends up engaged to J.D.'s son, Sam.
