J.D. from Scrubs: Sitcomdle character card

Who is J.D.?

John Michael Dorian, known to everyone as J.D., starts Scrubs as a first-year medical intern at Sacred Heart Hospital alongside his college roommate and best friend, surgical intern Christopher Turk. The show is told through his voiceover, so viewers hear every insecure thought he has and see the elaborate fantasies that play out in his head.

He grew up in Trotwood, Ohio, outside Dayton, with an often absent father, Sam, and an older brother, Dan, who drifts in and out of his life. At the hospital he latches onto the brilliant, abrasive Dr. Perry Cox as a mentor, a role Cox refuses to accept for years.

Personality and comedy

J.D. calls himself a sensitive guy who loves hugs, acoustic music, and Rowdy, the stuffed dog he and Turk treat as a real pet. His trademark daydreams, signaled by a tilt of the head and a blank stare upward, often end with him blurting out something that makes no sense to anyone else in the room.

Under the goofiness he is a genuinely good doctor who cares deeply about his patients. Much of the show's comedy and heart comes from his relationships: the brotherly bond with Turk, the constant abuse from Dr. Cox, who calls him "Newbie" and a rotating list of girls' names, and the endless war with the Janitor that begins over a penny stuck in a door on his very first day.

Key storylines

J.D.'s romantic life keeps circling back to fellow intern Elliot Reid. They get together and fall apart several times, including a short-lived relationship at the end of season three that ends when J.D. admits, at Turk's wedding rehearsal, that he does not love her. In season five his girlfriend, Dr. Kim Briggs, becomes pregnant, and their son, Sam, is born in season seven, though J.D. and Kim never make it as a couple.

In the season eight finale, "My Finale," J.D. leaves Sacred Heart for a job at another hospital to be near his son. He says goodbye to everyone, learns the truth about that penny from the Janitor, and finally hears Dr. Cox call him a great doctor and a friend, though only because Cox does not realize J.D. is listening. As he walks out, he imagines a future with Elliot, his friends, and their growing families.

Later years and legacy

In season nine, J.D. and Elliot are married and expecting a child, and he teaches at Winston University for part of the season before stepping away. He returns in ABC's 2026 revival, now divorced from Elliot, and accepts Dr. Cox's offer to take over as chief of medicine.

Braff earned a 2005 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and three straight Golden Globe nominations for the role. J.D. is named after Dr. Jonathan Doris, a college friend of creator Bill Lawrence who served as a medical adviser on the show.
