Christopher Turk, known to almost everyone simply as Turk, is a cocky, big-hearted surgeon and the other half of Scrubs' central friendship. Donald Faison plays him from his first day as a surgical intern, chasing Carla, competing with everyone, and loving J.D. like a brother.
On Scrubs, Christopher Turk's story runs through J.D. (Best Friend), Carla Espinosa (Wife), Perry Cox (Rival), Elliot Reid (Friend), Bob Kelso (Boss), and The Janitor (Bandmate).
Who is Christopher Turk?
Turk met J.D. when they were roommates at the College of William and Mary, and they kept living together through medical school and into their internships at Sacred Heart Hospital. Where J.D. is anxious and dreamy, Turk is a surgeon in training who loves the operating room and does not lack for self-esteem.
He comes from a big, close, sometimes chaotic family, including a brother, Kevin, who paid for his college and medical school. He is a devout Christian, and a grueling Christmas Eve shift at the hospital shakes that faith before it is restored.
Personality and comedy
Turk is a competitive alpha who cannot resist a contest, whether it is a bet, a game, or a battle of wits with Dr. Cox, who calls him "Gandhi," or Dr. Kelso, who insists on calling him "Turkleton." He and J.D. share a goofy private language of dances, poses, and bits, from doing the robot to caring for their stuffed dog, Rowdy.
Their friendship gets its anthem in the season six episode "My Musical," when the two sing "Guy Love," a duet celebrating just how close two best friends can be. Turk is also part of the hospital's air band, the Cool Cats, alongside the Janitor, Ted, and Lloyd the delivery man.
Key storylines
Turk starts dating Carla in the second episode and spends the next two seasons proposing, planning, and nearly missing his own wedding. Surgery and a church mix-up keep him from the ceremony in "My Best Friend's Wedding," so the couple asks a priest who is a patient at the hospital to marry them before the honeymoon. Their marriage hits a rough patch in season four, including a drunken kiss between Carla and J.D., but they come through it.
In season four Turk is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which he jokes about until a patient's amputation makes him take it seriously. He and Carla welcome their daughter, Isabella, in season six, and by the end of season eight Dr. Cox has made him chief of surgery.
Later years and legacy
Faison and John C. McGinley are the only original stars who stay full series regulars in season nine, when Turk teaches surgery at Winston University. He is back as chief of surgery in ABC's 2026 revival, now the father of four daughters with Carla. His name comes from Dr. Jon Turk, a medical consultant on the show.
His impromptu dance in the season five episode "My Half-Acre" found a second life in 2017 as the default dance emote in the video game Fortnite. Faison has said the moves were his own creation.
