April Ludgate starts out as a bored college intern who would rather be anywhere but the Parks Department. Aubrey Plaza plays her with a perfectly flat, withering stare that hides a surprisingly big heart.

On Parks and Recreation, April Ludgate's story runs through Andy Dwyer (Husband), Ron Swanson (Boss and Mentor), Leslie Knope (Coworker), Ben Wyatt (Boss), and Tom Haverford (Coworker).

Who is April Ludgate?

April joins the Parks Department as an unpaid intern and soon becomes Ron Swanson's assistant, a job she loves mainly because it lets her keep people away from him. She later helps with Leslie's city council campaign, works for Ben Wyatt in Washington, becomes deputy director of Animal Control, and eventually looks for a career that actually excites her.

She cultivates an image of total apathy, dresses in dark clothes, and enjoys making people uncomfortable. Her family, by contrast, is warm and cheerful, which makes her gloominess even funnier.

Personality and comedy

April's humor is dry, dark, and delivered with a blank face. She lies for fun, insults coworkers with a shrug, and treats office tasks as cruel and unusual punishment. Underneath it all, though, she is fiercely protective of the people she lets in, especially Andy, Ron, and eventually Leslie.

She and Ron share a mutual appreciation for doing as little as possible, which makes them an unlikely mentor and protege. Over time April grows from someone who hides from responsibility into a capable adult who still refuses to admit she cares.

Key storylines

April develops feelings for shoeshiner Andy Dwyer in season two, and after they finally get together in season three, they surprise everyone by getting married at a party they throw just weeks into dating. Their goofy, devoted marriage becomes one of the show's sweetest relationships.

She becomes the manager of Andy's band Mouse Rat, tries to turn Leslie's beloved Lot 48 into a dog park, and in season seven leaves the Parks Department for a job at a national service foundation, which takes her and Andy to Washington, D.C. In the finale's flash-forwards, she and Andy have a son, Jack, and are expecting another child.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Casting director Allison Jones introduced Aubrey Plaza to creators Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, and Plaza pitched the idea of a smart, bored intern as a contrast to Leslie. The writers built April around that pitch, and Plaza has said she partly based the apathy on her younger sister.

April became a breakout character, and Vanity Fair described her as a stand-in for millennial jadedness and skepticism. Plaza reprised the role alongside Amy Poehler in a 2023 Saturday Night Live sketch.
