Ron Swanson runs the Pawnee Parks Department while doing his best to make sure it accomplishes nothing. Nick Offerman plays him as a man of few words, many steaks, and fierce, hidden loyalty to his staff.
On Parks and Recreation, Ron Swanson's story runs through Leslie Knope (Deputy and Friend), April Ludgate (Assistant), Andy Dwyer (Shoeshiner), Tom Haverford (Employee), and Ben Wyatt (Friend).
Who is Ron Swanson?
Ron is Leslie Knope's boss and the director of the Pawnee Parks and Recreation Department. He took a government job largely to slow government down from the inside, and he guards his privacy so closely that his coworkers know almost nothing about his life outside the office.
He loves woodworking, hunting, the outdoors, breakfast food, and red meat, and he distrusts nearly everything else. Despite their opposite politics, he and Leslie become close friends, and Ron proves again and again that he cares deeply about the people who work for him.
Personality and comedy
Ron's comedy comes from his stillness. He delivers strong opinions in a flat, unbothered voice, refuses to waste words, and reacts to most of the world with silent disapproval. Every so often, though, his tough exterior cracks and reveals a softer man underneath.
His biggest secret is Duke Silver, the smooth jazz saxophonist he becomes on weekends in a neighboring town, beloved by a crowd of adoring fans. His coworkers slowly uncover the alter ego, and Ron finally plays as Duke in public at the Unity Concert in season six.
Key storylines
Ron has two ex-wives, both named Tammy. Tammy II, the librarian played by Megan Mullally, can turn him into a wreck in seconds, and her return visits are some of the show's wildest episodes. Tammy I, played by Patricia Clarkson, is even more frightening.
In season five he meets Diane Lewis, a single mother played by Lucy Lawless, and in the season six premiere, after she tells him she is pregnant, they marry at city hall. Ron leaves the Parks Department to start the Very Good Building Company, briefly falls out with Leslie, and in the finale becomes superintendent of the new Pawnee National Park.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Nick Offerman shared the 2011 TCA Award for individual achievement in comedy with Ty Burrell, and critics widely called his missing Emmy nomination that year one of the season's biggest snubs; he was never nominated for the role. Offerman is a real woodworker, a passion the show worked into Ron's character. Megan Mullally, who plays Tammy II, is his wife in real life.
Ron is one of the most quoted characters of the 2010s, a favorite on mugs and posters for his blunt philosophies on breakfast, privacy, and personal freedom.
