Chris Traeger from Parks and Recreation: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Chris Traeger?

Chris is an Indiana state auditor who comes to Pawnee with his partner Ben Wyatt when the city runs out of money. He hates delivering bad news, so he handles the cheerful pep talks and leaves the painful details to Ben. Later he returns as Pawnee's acting city manager after the previous manager has a heart attack, and he stays in the job for years.

His sunny outlook has a backstory. As a baby he was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder and not expected to survive, so he treats every day as a gift. He runs miles on his lunch break, eats food that horrifies his coworkers, and keeps his body fat so low that a simple flu knocks him flat.

Personality and comedy

Chris is funny because he is completely sincere. He points at people and repeats their names when he meets them, describes ordinary things as "literally" the best he has ever experienced, and orders a beer in a careful series of separate sentences. His positivity is so total that he can break up with someone without her noticing it happened.

Underneath the glow, the show slowly reveals a man who is terrified of imperfection and mortality. A minor case of tendinitis sends him into an existential spiral, and being dumped in season four sends him into a depression that has him seeing a therapist by season five. Those cracks make him warmer and more human without dimming his energy.

Key storylines

Chris spends much of the series circling Ann Perkins. They meet when a heartbroken Ann kisses him at a bar, date in season three, and split when Chris breaks up with her so cheerfully that she does not realize it. As city manager he also bans workplace dating, which forces Ben and Leslie to hide their relationship, and when they finally confess, Chris orders a formal ethics inquiry into it.

In season five, Ann asks Chris to be the father of the child she wants to have, and the two rediscover their feelings for each other. With Ann pregnant, they leave Pawnee together for Michigan in season six to be near her family, and their son Oliver is born soon after. The finale shows them married, raising a son and a daughter, and deciding to move back to Pawnee.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Rob Lowe joined Parks and Recreation after leaving Brothers and Sisters. Chris was planned as a short guest role covering the end of season two and part of season three, but Lowe became a regular from season three and signed a multi-year deal. Michael Schur has said the habit of pointing at people and repeating their names was one of the first details the writers invented, and Chris's goal of living 150 years came from an article read by Michael Schur's wife.

Critics called Chris one of the funniest performances of Lowe's long career, singling out his delirious flu episode. NBC hoped Lowe would lift the show's ratings, which barely moved, but the character won over critics, and his drawn-out "literally" became one of his signature tics. Lowe's performance was even submitted for the 2011 Emmys in the lead actor category, though the role is usually seen as supporting.
