- Donna Marie Meagle, Meagle
Donna Meagle runs the parks department office with total self-assurance and a private life full of hints and rumors. Played by Retta, she grows from a background face into one of the show's best scene stealers, and, with Tom Haverford, the keeper of the annual Treat Yo' Self day.
On Parks and Recreation, Donna Meagle's story runs through Tom Haverford (Best Friend), Jerry Gergich (Coworker), April Ludgate (Maid of Honor), Ron Swanson (Boss), and Leslie Knope (Boss).
Who is Donna Meagle?
Donna works in the Pawnee Parks and Recreation Department, where she is part of the office from the very first episode. She is worldly, unbothered, and fiercely protective of the things she loves, especially her Mercedes-Benz SUV. She is also a part investor in the Snakehole Lounge, the nightclub where half of Pawnee's bad decisions are made.
The joke of Donna is how little her coworkers actually know about her. She mentions properties out of town, a long list of exes, a famous cousin in Ginuwine, and adventures she never fully explains. She says the Meagles are a cold people, and her relationship with her family stays complicated for most of the series.
Personality and comedy
Donna rarely raises her voice, because she rarely needs to. A single look or a flat one-liner is usually enough, and the writers gave her more and more of them as the seasons went on. She is selfish in a cheerful, honest way, and she makes no apologies for wanting nice things.
That attitude peaks in Treat Yo' Self, the annual day she and Tom Haverford spend on massages, mimosas, and shopping they cannot quite justify. Beneath the attitude, she can be surprisingly kind. She is the first in the office to feel guilty about how everyone treats Jerry, and she pitches in on Leslie's city council campaign when it counts.
Key storylines
For most of the run, Donna's romantic life plays out in glimpses, with a parade of suitors that the show treats as a running gag. In season six she runs into her ex-boyfriend Joe, a schoolteacher, and asks Ron to help her dodge him. Instead, Ron helps her see that a steady, drama-free relationship would not make her boring, and she gives Joe a second chance.
They marry in season seven in a wedding that April has to hold together, and the seating card Donna fills out with Jerry's real name, Garry, finally gets the office calling him that. She and Joe then move to Seattle, where she works in real estate, and the finale's flash-forwards show the two of them starting a nonprofit together.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Retta appeared as Donna from the pilot, first as a recurring player, then in the starring credits from season three, and finally as full main cast from the season six episode "Anniversaries." Donna does not even get a spoken line until the fourth episode, "Boys' Club." Critics noted that the show gave Donna sharper material and more personality starting in season two.
"Treat yo' self" became a catchphrase well beyond the show, and fans still borrow the idea for their own days of indulgence. Retta has joked in her stand-up that the job was stressful early on, because no one knew how long the show would stay on the air.
