Ben Wyatt rolls into Pawnee as a buttoned-up state auditor with a spreadsheet, a sarcastic streak, and a very embarrassing past as a teenage mayor. Played by Adam Scott, he goes from the man threatening to cut the parks department to Leslie Knope's partner in everything.
On Parks and Recreation, Ben Wyatt's story runs through Leslie Knope (Wife), Chris Traeger (Best Friend), Tom Haverford (Friend), April Ludgate (Former Roommate), Andy Dwyer (Former Roommate), and Ron Swanson (Coworker).
Who is Ben Wyatt?
Ben is an Indiana state auditor sent to Pawnee alongside Chris Traeger when the city's budget collapses. Where Chris delivers every piece of news with a beaming smile, Ben is the one who actually has to explain the cuts, which makes him the least popular man in city hall and puts him on a collision course with Leslie Knope.
He carries a famous scar from his youth. At 18 he was elected mayor of his small hometown of Partridge, Minnesota, poured its money into a winter sports complex that never got finished, and was impeached within months. He became an auditor partly to prove that he could be trusted with public money again.
Personality and comedy
Ben is the calm, deadpan center of a very loud show. He reacts to Pawnee's oddities, from its town-wide worship of a miniature horse to its bizarre local media, with the weary disbelief of an outsider, and that reaction is often the joke. When he does lose his cool, as in a disastrous run of interviews about his mayoral past, the panic is all the funnier because he is usually so contained.
He is also a proud nerd. Star Wars, Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones references pour out of him, Tom Haverford never stops teasing him for it, and his love of calzones becomes a running gag. Between jobs he invents the Cones of Dunshire, a fantasy board game with rules so complicated that only its creator can fully explain them.
Key storylines
Ben's slow conversion from outsider to true Pawnee believer drives season three. He helps Leslie pull off the Harvest Festival, takes a full-time job with the city, and finally kisses her after a work trip to Indianapolis. Because Chris has banned workplace dating, the two keep their relationship secret, and when it comes out, Ben resigns so that Leslie can keep her job.
That sacrifice opens the next chapter. He manages Leslie's city council campaign, leaves for a congressional campaign in Washington, then comes home and proposes. The two marry in a rushed, chaotic ceremony at the parks department, Ben later becomes Pawnee's city manager, and the couple have triplets. The finale's flash-forwards show him winning a seat in Congress and stepping aside so Leslie can run for governor.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Adam Scott left the lead role on Starz's Party Down to join Parks and Recreation, and co-creator Michael Schur has said Scott was the dream choice for Ben. Scott and Rob Lowe joined the show in the same episode near the end of season two. The idea of a politician trying to rebuild a career after a humiliating public failure was one of the show's earliest concepts for its protagonist, later folded into Ben, and Schur has said the unfinished ice rink was inspired by a real sports center in Wasilla, Alaska.
Critics praised Scott for playing both the sane straight man and, when the script calls for it, a man coming completely unglued, with his panicked interviews in "Media Blitz" singled out. Some reviewers also noticed echoes of his Party Down character, a comparison Scott has waved off. Ben and Leslie's romance became the emotional backbone of the later seasons, and Mayfair Games eventually released a real version of the Cones of Dunshire.
