Who is Leslie Knope?

Leslie is the deputy director of the Parks and Recreation Department in Pawnee, a quirky small town in Indiana. She grew up in Pawnee, studied public affairs at Indiana University, and has wanted a life in government for as long as she can remember. Her stated dream is to become the first woman president of the United States.

The series begins when she promises a local nurse, Ann Perkins, that she will turn an abandoned construction pit into a park. That small project becomes the spark for everything that follows, from her friendships at the office to her rise through politics.

Personality and comedy

Leslie is cheerful, ambitious, and fiercely loyal, and she approaches every task with overwhelming preparation. She loves waffles with whipped cream from JJ's Diner, showers her friends with handmade gifts, and hosts Galentine's Day, a celebration of her female friends. She frequently clashes with her boss, Ron Swanson, who wants as little government as possible.

In the first season she came across as more scattered, and the writers retooled her from season two into a sharp, capable leader whose only real flaw is caring too much. That shift is a big reason the show found its voice.

Key storylines

Leslie falls for Ben Wyatt, a state auditor, and their romance has to stay secret for a while because of a rule against workplace relationships. In season four she runs for Pawnee City Council and wins, and in season five she and Ben move their wedding up and marry in a rushed, same-night ceremony after a gala.

In season six she loses a recall vote and her council seat, takes a regional job with the National Park Service that she convinces her bosses to base in Pawnee, and learns she is expecting triplets. The finale's flash-forwards show her serving two terms as governor of Indiana and hint at an even bigger future.

Behind the scenes and legacy

The show was developed around Amy Poehler after she agreed to star, and the character's early ditzy edges were sanded off in response to criticism of season one. Poehler won the 2014 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and earned six Emmy nominations for the role.

Entertainment Weekly named Leslie one of the best TV characters of the last 25 years, and Galentine's Day has become a real celebration each February 13. Poehler has returned to the role for a 2020 special and a 2023 Saturday Night Live sketch.
