Who is Tom Haverford?

Tom is an administrator in the Pawnee Parks and Recreation Department and, at first, one of its least motivated employees. He grew up in South Carolina, changed his birth name to something he thought would play better in politics, and cares a great deal about clothes, gadgets, and looking successful.

What he really wants is to be an entrepreneur. Over the series he tries a long list of ventures, some ridiculous and some surprisingly smart, and his journey from slacker to restaurant owner is one of the show's quiet success stories.

Personality and comedy

Tom is confident, flashy, and constantly selling himself. He invents nicknames for foods, talks in his own slang, and treats every social situation as a chance to network. His annual Treat Yo' Self day with Donna, a spree of buying things they do not need, became one of the show's most famous traditions.

Under the bravado, Tom is insecure and eager to be taken seriously. His friendships with Leslie and Ron, who each see real potential in him, keep pulling him back to Pawnee when his big plans fall apart.

Key storylines

Early on, Tom is going through a divorce from Wendy, a Canadian college friend he married so she could stay in the United States, even though he has real feelings for her. In season three he quits city hall to join his friend Jean-Ralphio at the entertainment company Entertainment 720, which spends lavishly and quickly goes bankrupt.

Back at the Parks Department, he launches Rent-A-Swag, which rents designer clothes to middle schoolers, and later opens Tom's Bistro, which finally succeeds. He reconnects with his old girlfriend Lucy and proposes, and in the finale's flash-forwards a failed attempt to franchise the bistro wipes him out, and he bounces back by writing a book about his failures.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Creators Greg Daniels and Michael Schur planned to cast Aziz Ansari from the earliest stages of developing the show. Critics singled out his performance early on, with some calling Tom the funniest character in season one.

Treat Yo' Self became a real-world catchphrase and a pop culture shorthand for indulgence, and Tom remains one of the most quoted characters from the show.
