Also known as
Daphne Crane, Daphne Moon Crane

Daphne Moon is the warm, chatty, slightly psychic physical therapist who moves into Frasier's apartment to care for his father, Martin. Played by Jane Leeves, she is the down-to-earth foil to the Crane brothers' snobbery and one half of the show's great slow-burn romance.

On Frasier, Daphne Moon's story runs through Niles Crane (Husband), Martin Crane (Patient, later father-in-law), Frasier Crane (Employer, later brother-in-law), Roz Doyle (Friend), and Eddie (Housemate).

Daphne Moon from Frasier: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Daphne Moon?

Daphne is an English immigrant from Manchester, the only daughter in a big family of brothers. In the first episode, Frasier hires her as a live-in home health care worker to help Martin recover from his injury, and she becomes part of the household almost overnight.

She is practical, kind, and unpretentious, and she gets along with Martin far better than his sons do. She also believes she is "a bit psychic," and in the early seasons her premonitions and stories about her eccentric family back home punctuate many early episodes.

Personality and comedy

Daphne's comedy comes from her cheerful oddness. She tells wild stories about her brothers and her childhood in Manchester with a perfectly straight face, cooks food the Cranes find alarming, and reads the room through her claimed psychic gift. She is completely unbothered by Frasier's grandeur.

For years, she is also oblivious to Niles's obvious crush on her, which gives the show years of near-misses and dramatic irony. Jane Leeves plays her as grounded and genuine, which keeps the romance sweet rather than silly.

Key storylines

Daphne becomes engaged to Donny Douglas, a lawyer, but in season seven she learns about Niles's feelings and starts to realize she shares them. On the night before her wedding, Niles confesses his love, and the next morning she leaves Donny at the altar to be with Niles in the season seven finale.

Niles proposes in season nine, and the two marry secretly in Reno at the start of season ten, then hold extra ceremonies for their families. Daphne's overbearing mother, Gertrude, her much warmer father, Harry, and several of her eight brothers turn up along the way. In the series finale, she gives birth to their son, David, at a veterinary clinic during Martin's wedding.

Behind the scenes and legacy

The character was originally conceived differently, but NBC executive Warren Littlefield suggested making her English and proposed Jane Leeves for the part. When Leeves became pregnant in real life during season eight, the writers covered it with a storyline about Daphne gaining weight.

Leeves has admitted that her Manchester accent was never quite right, but Daphne remains a fan favorite, and her romance with Niles is one of the best-loved love stories of 1990s television.
