Eddie is Martin Crane's beloved Jack Russell terrier and the one member of the household Frasier can never win over. Played first by a dog named Moose and later by Moose's son Enzo, he became one of the most famous animal characters on television.
On Frasier, Eddie's story runs through Martin Crane (Owner), Frasier Crane (Staring target), Daphne Moon (Housemate), Lilith Sternin (The one person he fears), and Niles Crane.
Who is Eddie?
Eddie is a small, wiry Jack Russell terrier who belongs to Martin. When Martin moves in with Frasier in the first episode, Eddie comes too, along with the battered recliner, and he immediately makes himself at home in Frasier's carefully designed apartment.
He adores Martin and gets along famously with Daphne, but his relationship with Frasier is another story. Eddie seems to understand exactly what the humans around him are saying, and he often appears to be quietly taunting the master of the house.
Personality and comedy
Eddie's most famous gag is the stare. In the early seasons he fixes Frasier with a long, silent gaze, as if he wants something or knows something, and Frasier's growing exasperation became one of the show's best running jokes.
The writers treat Eddie almost like a cast member. He has moods, rivalries, and opinions, and the humans react to him as if he were in on the joke. The only person who truly intimidates him is Lilith, who can make him obey with a single look.
Key storylines
Eddie gets a few storylines of his own. Early in season two he fathers a litter of puppies, and the Cranes argue over whether he should be neutered. In season four he becomes listless and stops eating, and the family ends up taking him to a dog psychiatrist, much to Frasier and Niles's dismay.
A later flashback reveals that, before he was shot, Martin owned a goldfish named Eddie and insisted he was not a dog person. In the series finale, Martin accidentally books his wedding to Ronee on Eddie's birthday.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Eddie was originally played by Moose, a wire-haired Jack Russell terrier trained by Mathilde de Cagny. Moose played the role from 1993 to 2000, and his son Enzo later took over. Moose also played the older Skip in the 2000 film My Dog Skip and appeared on several magazine covers.
Moose even had a tongue-in-cheek autobiography, My Life as a Dog, written by Brian Hargrove, the husband of Niles actor David Hyde Pierce. Eddie is not part of Frasier's credited main cast, so he counts as a recurring character here, even though he is part of the household for the whole run.
