Martin Crane is a beer-and-baseball retired cop whose two sons are fussy, wine-loving psychiatrists. Played by John Mahoney, he is the gruff, warm, sensible center of Frasier, and his clashes with his sons over taste are some of the show's funniest scenes.
On Frasier, Martin Crane's story runs through Frasier Crane (Son), Niles Crane (Son), Daphne Moon (Caregiver, later daughter-in-law), Eddie (Dog), and Roz Doyle (Friend).
Who is Martin Crane?
Martin is a former Army man and longtime Seattle police officer who rose to homicide detective. He retired after being shot in the hip while interrupting a convenience store robbery, and the injury leaves him walking with a cane and unable to live on his own.
In the first episode, he moves in with Frasier, bringing along a battered, taped-up recliner that clashes with every piece of designer furniture in the apartment, and his Jack Russell terrier, Eddie. His late wife, Hester, was a psychiatrist, which helps explain the sons he loves and does not always understand.
Personality and comedy
Martin is plain-spoken, practical, and suspicious of anything fancy. He likes cheap beer, sports on TV, and his local bar, and he has little patience for his sons' opera tickets and wine tastings. His dry one-liners puncture Frasier and Niles's pretensions again and again.
John Mahoney plays him with enormous warmth. Martin struggles to say how he feels, especially to his sons, but the show steadily reveals the pride and love under the gruff exterior, and many of the series' most moving moments belong to him.
Key storylines
Martin's arc is about learning to live with his sons as adults, and letting them learn to live with him. He helps Frasier solve an old murder case he never closed, takes the boys ice fishing in an attempt to connect, and dates a string of women, including a relationship with the brassy Sherry Dempsey that runs through seasons four and five.
In the final season, he reconnects with Ronee Lawrence, a woman who once babysat Frasier and Niles. They fall for each other quickly, and in the series finale, Martin and Ronee marry in a hastily arranged ceremony at a veterinary clinic, the same day Daphne gives birth to his grandson.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Martin was partly inspired by a co-creator's own father. The producers flew to Chicago to show John Mahoney the script and gave him the role without an audition, and he played Martin in every season of the show.
Mahoney died in 2018. When the Frasier revival premiered in 2023, the story begins with Frasier returning to Boston after Martin's funeral, a tribute to the character and the actor.
