Roz Doyle runs the booth on Frasier's radio show, keeping the callers moving and her boss's ego in check. Played by Peri Gilpin, she is quick, frank, and fearless, and her friendship with Frasier grows into one of the most genuine relationships on the show.

Who is Roz Doyle?

Roz is the producer of The Dr. Frasier Crane Show on KACL, the Seattle radio station where Frasier works. She grew up in the small town of Bloomer, Wisconsin, moved to Seattle as an adult, and had already spent years working in radio before she started screening Frasier's calls.

She is the person who sees Frasier at his most ridiculous on a daily basis, and she never lets him get away with it. Over the years she becomes a trusted friend to the whole Crane family, especially Martin and Daphne.

Personality and comedy

Roz is blunt, worldly, and completely comfortable with herself. Her active dating life draws endless wisecracks, and her rapid-fire insult battles with Niles are a highlight of many episodes. She is the one character who can cut Frasier down to size with a single look through the booth window.

Peri Gilpin also plays her as fiercely loyal and emotionally honest. When Frasier is hurting, Roz is often the first person to tell him the truth, and when Roz is in trouble, Frasier is just as quick to show up for her.

Key storylines

In season five, Roz learns she is pregnant after a brief fling with a much younger man and decides to raise the baby on her own. Her daughter, Alice, is born near the end of that season, and single motherhood becomes a big part of her life for the rest of the series.

Through much of season nine she has her steadiest relationship yet, with Roger, a city trash collector. After they break up, she and Frasier spend a night together, and once things get awkward they agree to put it behind them and stay friends. In the series finale, Roz is named station manager at KACL, a fitting reward for the person who kept the station running all along.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Lisa Kudrow was originally cast as Roz, but during rehearsals the producers decided she was not the right fit for the assertive producer, and Peri Gilpin, their second choice, took over before the show began filming. Kudrow went on to play Phoebe on Friends.

Gilpin reprised Roz in the 2023 Paramount+ revival. Roz visits Boston to help Frasier through his first Christmas after Martin's death, and in season two, with KACL struggling, Frasier encourages her to move east to be closer to her grown daughter.
