Niles Crane is Frasier's younger brother, rival, and best friend, a delicate, hyper-refined psychiatrist who makes Frasier look relaxed. Played by David Hyde Pierce, his years-long longing for Daphne Moon became the central romance of Frasier.
On Frasier, Niles Crane's story runs through Frasier Crane (Brother), Daphne Moon (Wife), Martin Crane (Father), Roz Doyle (Sparring partner), and Lilith Sternin (Sister-in-law).
Who is Niles Crane?
Niles is a Seattle psychiatrist with a prosperous private practice and an even more refined set of tastes than his brother. He is married to Maris, a wealthy, demanding, and eccentric woman who is discussed in every season but never seen on screen.
From the first episode, Niles is a near-constant presence at Frasier's apartment, where he trades barbs with his brother and squirms around his father. The moment he meets Daphne, the English caregiver Frasier hires to look after Martin, he quietly falls head over heels.
Personality and comedy
Niles is fastidious to the point of absurdity. He wipes down chairs before sitting in them, faints at the sight of blood, and treats wine, opera, and fabric with religious seriousness. His sibling rivalry with Frasier fuels some of the show's best farce, and the two often team up to make a bad situation much worse.
David Hyde Pierce gives him superb physical comedy and a deep vein of feeling. Niles's hopeless crush on Daphne, expressed in swoons, sighs, and near-confessions, makes him both ridiculous and enormously sympathetic.
Key storylines
Niles's marriage to Maris finally falls apart, and after a long and costly divorce he moves into a luxury building and starts over. He briefly marries Mel Karnofsky, a plastic surgeon, and on the eve of Daphne's wedding to Donny Douglas, he finally confesses his feelings. Daphne walks out on her own wedding to be with Niles in the season seven finale, and season eight follows their bumpy early courtship while his sham marriage to Mel winds down.
Niles proposes in season nine, and the couple marry secretly in Reno at the start of season ten, then stage more ceremonies to keep their families happy. Later that season he undergoes heart surgery. In the series finale, Daphne gives birth to their son, David, at a veterinary clinic during Martin's wedding.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Niles was not part of the original plan for Frasier. On Cheers, Frasier had claimed to be an only child. Then an assistant casting director brought the producers a photo of David Hyde Pierce, pointing out how much he resembled a younger Kelsey Grammer, and they created a brother for Frasier around him.
Hyde Pierce was nominated for an Emmy every year the show was on the air and won four times. Niles is widely seen as one of the great supporting characters in sitcom history.
