Cameron Tucker is the flamboyant, emotional, and endlessly talented half of the Tucker-Pritchett household. Played by Eric Stonestreet, Cam can turn any family event into a production number, and his clashes and makeups with Mitchell power much of Modern Family.

On Modern Family, Cameron Tucker's story runs through Mitchell Pritchett (Husband), Jay Pritchett (Father-in-law), Claire Dunphy (Sister-in-law), Gloria Pritchett (Friend), Phil Dunphy (Brother-in-law), and Luke Dunphy (Nephew).

Who is Cameron Tucker?

Cam grew up on a farm in Missouri and played center on the University of Illinois football team before settling down with Mitchell. When the series begins, he is a stay-at-home dad to their newly adopted daughter, Lily, having taught music before that.

He has a long list of surprising skills: drumming, flower arranging, fountain pen collecting, and a professional clown act as Fizbo. He also loves sports, which gives him an unexpected bond with his father-in-law, Jay, much to Mitchell's frustration.

Personality and comedy

Cam is big in every way. He cries easily, plans elaborate surprises, and stages family moments with full theatrical flair, most famously presenting baby Lily to the family in the pilot to the sound of "Circle of Life." He has a drama queen streak a mile wide and never apologizes for it.

That warmth makes him the emotional opposite of the reserved Mitchell, and their differences drive much of their comedy. Cam is also physically imposing and fiercely protective, and the show gets plenty of laughs from the gap between his soft heart and his football player frame.

Key storylines

Cam goes back to work in season four as a music teacher at Luke and Manny's school, and when that job is cut he becomes the school's football coach and physical education teacher, eventually leading the varsity team. He and Mitchell get engaged at the start of season five and marry in that season's chaotic two-part finale.

In the final season Cam considers a college football coaching job in his home state of Missouri, which strains things with Mitchell. After the couple adopts a newborn son, Rexford, the job comes open again, and in the series finale Mitchell agrees to move so Cam can take it.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Eric Stonestreet was a relatively unknown actor who had to fight for the role. It paid off: he won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2010 and 2012, and earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations as well.

IGN's season one review named Cam the best character of the year and called "Fizbo" the season's highlight. The couple's popularity later led to talk of a Mitchell and Cam spinoff, which has not made it to air.
