Jay Pritchett is the dry-witted, old-school head of the family, father of Claire and Mitchell and husband of Gloria. Played by Ed O'Neill, he spends 11 seasons learning, grumbling all the way, how to be a softer and more open father and grandfather.

Who is Jay Pritchett?

Jay is the founder of a successful closet business and the closest thing the family has to a chieftain. After divorcing his first wife, DeDe, he married Gloria, a passionate Colombian woman many years his junior, and became stepfather to her son, Manny. His adult children, Claire and Mitchell, run the other two households in the show.

He is a Navy veteran of the Vietnam era, a sports fan, a model airplane enthusiast, and the doting owner of a dog named Stella. He likes routine, quiet, and getting his way, and he rarely gets any of them.

Personality and comedy

Jay's humor is bone dry. He delivers sarcastic asides about his family's antics, endures Phil's constant bids for approval, and plays straight man to Gloria's fiery energy. Much of the comedy comes from a traditional man being dragged, one awkward conversation at a time, into a more modern idea of family.

The heart of his arc is his relationship with Mitchell, which starts out strained by Jay's discomfort with his son being gay and grows into genuine pride and closeness. He also bonds slowly with the sensitive Manny, coming to treat his stepson as his own, and he quietly sees his granddaughter Alex as the future leader of the family.

Key storylines

In the pilot Jay is mistaken for Gloria's father, a running gag about their age gap that the show keeps returning to. In season four Gloria tells him she is pregnant, and their son, Joe, is born later that season. Jay turns 65 that same year and starts thinking harder about his legacy.

His biggest late arc involves handing over his company. Jay brings Claire into the business, eventually puts her in charge, and later retires so she can own it, then spends the final seasons chasing side projects like a dog bed business. In the finale he surprises Gloria by learning Spanish so he can join her and Joe on their trip to Colombia.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Ed O'Neill was already famous as Al Bundy on Married... with Children, and he initially lost the part of Jay to Craig T. Nelson before getting it when Nelson turned the role down. He was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series three years running, from 2011 to 2013.

O'Neill's grumpy warmth gave the ensemble its anchor, and Jay became the rare sitcom patriarch who visibly changes over a long run without losing the edge that made him funny.
