Gloria Pritchett is Jay's glamorous and fearless wife, a devoted mother who will do anything for her sons. Played by Sofía Vergara, she brings fire, warmth, and a steady stream of creatively mispronounced English to Modern Family.

Who is Gloria Pritchett?

Gloria grew up in Colombia and has a son, Manny, from her first marriage to the charming but unreliable Javier Delgado. She married Jay, who is many years older, and stepped into a ready-made family that included two adult stepchildren, Claire and Mitchell. Claire in particular is wary of her at first.

At home Gloria is the emotional center of Jay's house: protective of Manny, devoted to her husband, and unafraid to say exactly what she thinks. In season four she and Jay have a son together, Joe, and she becomes an American citizen later in the series.

Personality and comedy

Gloria's best-known running joke is her mispronunciation of everyday English words and phrases, and Vergara has said many of those slips were her own improvisations. She is also a terrible driver who has no idea she is a terrible driver, a crack shot with a gun, and someone with an unnervingly calm attitude toward death and pests.

She hints at a colorful past back home and occasionally lets slip details that alarm the rest of the family. Under the bluster she is loving and loyal, and some of the show's sweetest moments come from her fierce defense of Manny's sensitive, old-soul personality.

Key storylines

Early on, Gloria's age gap with Jay and her outsider status drive much of her story, from Claire's private gold digger remark to the family slowly accepting her. Her pregnancy is revealed at the end of season three, and Joe is born midway through season four.

In later seasons Gloria looks for purpose beyond the house. She launches a hot sauce business built on a family recipe, and in the final season she trains in real estate and goes to work with Phil. In the finale she worries she is no longer needed at home, until Jay reassures her and decides to travel with her and Joe to Colombia.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Sofía Vergara, who like Gloria was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, earned four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, along with Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for the role. The character was modeled on Angela, the role Rosie Perez played in Jim Jarmusch's 1991 film Night on Earth.

Vergara has said many of Gloria's famous word mix-ups were improvised on set, and that playful looseness is a big part of why the character became one of the show's signature voices.
