Luke Dunphy is the happy-go-lucky youngest child of Phil and Claire, a kid whose head is always somewhere else. Played by Nolan Gould, he grows from a rambunctious grade schooler into a surprisingly well-connected young man over Modern Family's 11 seasons.

Who is Luke Dunphy?

Luke is Phil and Claire's only son and youngest child. He is named after his great-grandfather on Claire's side, and he shares his dad's boundless energy, love of goofy schemes, and gift for wandering off mid-conversation. His older sisters, Haley and Alex, treat him as a lovable nuisance.

His best friend is Manny, Gloria's son, who is technically his step-uncle despite being about the same age. The two bicker, plot, and team up through every season of the show, and their friendship is one of its constant threads.

Personality and comedy

Early Luke is the family's space cadet. He gets his head stuck in railings, misunderstands grown-up conversations, and famously repeats Claire's private gold digger remark about Gloria as "coal digger." His parents admit they may have dropped the ball with him, though a psychologist assures them he is perfectly bright.

As he gets older, Luke reveals a knack for getting by on charm and connections. He becomes a popular fixture at Jay's country club and a mini con artist with a good heart, and his bond with Phil, built on shared silliness, is among the show's warmest relationships.

In season two Luke befriends the family's elderly neighbor, Walt Kleezak, to his parents' nervous surprise, and in season three he has to cope with Walt's death. In season four he breaks Phil's heart by deciding to give up magic. He and Manny graduate high school together at the end of season eight.

Luke's college path is bumpy. He gets into college, and Phil, to Luke's horror, starts teaching a class there, and in the final season he asks to drop out to work on an app. He also kisses Manny's ex-girlfriend Sherry, which leads to a blowup between the two friends. In the series finale he announces he has been accepted to the University of Oregon and is moving out.

Nolan Gould joined Modern Family as a young child and played Luke for the full run of the series, so viewers watched him grow from a grade schooler into a college-bound young adult on screen.
