Claire Dunphy from Modern Family: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Claire Dunphy?

Claire is Jay's daughter, Mitchell's older sister, and Phil's wife. She was a self-described wild child in her youth, and now that she has three kids of her own (Haley, Alex, and Luke), she lives in mild terror that they will make the same choices she did. She gave up a promising career in hotel management when she became pregnant with Haley.

She is the planner of the extended family, the one who organizes holidays, portraits, and get-togethers, and the one who notices when anything is out of place. Her relationship with Gloria, her much younger stepmother, starts out frosty and warms into a real friendship over the years.

Personality and comedy

Claire's comedy is the slow burn. Julie Bowen lets her simmer through one family fiasco after another, often saying everything with a single glance at the documentary camera, until the pressure finally blows. She is competitive about everything, obsessed with being right, and a little too invested in Halloween, which she treats as her one night to go completely over the top.

She is also a loving, devoted mother and a true partner to Phil. Their marriage is full of bickering and role-play, but it is the show's steadiest relationship, and Claire is often the one who quietly fixes what everyone else breaks.

Key storylines

In season three Claire is so annoyed by a local councilman that she runs for city council herself, a campaign that ends on a chaotic Election Day. In season five she finally joins her father's company, Pritchett's Closets and Blinds, and spends the next several seasons proving she can run it. Jay eventually hands her control of the business and later retires so she can truly own it.

The pressure catches up with her in the final season. Claire quits the company, struggles with not being the boss, and then lands a new job at an organization firm after an online interview goes sideways in the best way. In the finale, as all three kids leave home, she and Phil admit how much they will miss the chaos.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Julie Bowen won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series twice in a row, in 2011 and 2012, and was nominated in other years as well. Early reviews praised her for turning a part that could have been a bland sitcom mom into one of the ensemble's standouts.

Claire also anchors one of the show's most inventive episodes, "Connection Lost," which unfolds entirely on her laptop screen as she tries to track down Haley while stuck at an airport.
