Phil Dunphy from Modern Family: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Phil Dunphy?

Phil is a suburban Los Angeles real estate agent, the husband of Claire, and the father of Haley, Alex, and Luke. He was a cheerleader in college, and he still approaches life with the same pom-pom energy. He calls his parenting style "peerenting," which mostly means talking like a teenager and hoping the kids think he is cool.

He is the son-in-law Jay Pritchett never quite asked for, and winning Jay over is one of his lifelong projects. Phil loves magic tricks, new technology, and a good pun, and he treats every family outing as a chance to make a memory, whether the family wants one or not.

Personality and comedy

Phil's comedy comes from pure enthusiasm meeting the real world. He is the dad who rehearses jokes, trips on the same broken stair for years, and takes his talking-head interviews as seriously as a TED talk. He is terrified of clowns, delighted by gadgets, and prone to accidental double meanings he never notices.

What keeps him from being a cartoon is his kindness. Phil is the family member most likely to comfort someone, apologize first, or see the best in a stranger, and he and Claire have one of TV's more genuinely romantic marriages, complete with a long-running role-play in which he becomes the smooth businessman Clive Bixby.

Key storylines

Early seasons mine Phil's rivalry with Jay and his attempts to bond with his kids, from his birthday wish for a brand new iPad to a Realtors' banquet speech that Claire secretly sabotages, only for him to bring the house down by improvising. Later he chases a place in a prestigious magic society, starts teaching a real estate class at Luke's college, and eventually mentors Gloria when she becomes a realtor.

The show also gives Phil real grief. His mother dies at the end of season four, and the family flies to Florida for her funeral. In the final season his father, Frank, shows signs of decline, and Phil spends one last great day with him before Frank dies. In the finale, with the kids moving out, Phil and Claire plan an RV road trip together.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Ty Burrell won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series twice, in 2011 and 2014, on top of several other nominations for the role. He also won a Screen Actors Guild Award for the role in 2014.

Phil's mix of goofiness and decency made him the show's breakout dad. The National Association of Realtors even hired Burrell to appear in character as Phil in a 2016 ad campaign, a sign of how firmly the character had become everyone's idea of a friendly realtor.
