Carol Willick is the reason Ross is newly single when Friends begins: his wife of several years has left him for a woman. Played by Anita Barone in her first appearance and by Jane Sibbett after that, she stays in Ross's life as his friendly ex and the mother of their son, Ben.

On Friends, Carol Willick's story runs through Ross Geller (Ex-husband), Monica Geller (Former sister-in-law), Chandler Bing, Joey Tribbiani, and Phoebe Buffay.

Who is Carol Willick?

Carol was Ross's wife before the series begins, and by the pilot their marriage is over because she has come out as a lesbian and moved in with her partner, Susan Bunch. Ross takes the split hard, and his heartbreak drives much of his early storyline.

In the second episode Carol tells Ross that she is pregnant with his baby and that she and Susan plan to raise the child together, while still wanting Ross to be involved. That arrangement becomes one of the show's most enduring setups, with Ross, Carol, and Susan all sharing parenting duties.

Personality and comedy

Carol is calm, kind, and endlessly patient, which makes her the perfect straight woman for Ross's nervous jealousy. She and Susan are often amused, and occasionally exasperated, by Ross's behavior, especially his rivalry with Susan over who gets to be more involved with the baby.

The show treats Carol warmly rather than as a punchline. She and Ross remain on good terms, and their friendship is one of the more grown-up relationships in the early seasons.

Key storylines

Carol gives birth to her son at the end of season one after a chaotic day at the hospital, where Ross and Susan get locked in a janitor's closet together and come out agreeing on the name Ben. In season two Carol and Susan plan their wedding, but Carol's parents refuse to attend, and it is Ross who convinces her to go through with the ceremony anyway.

Carol appears less often in later seasons as Ben's storylines shift to visits and weekends with Ross. She shows up in the season six alternate reality episode in which she and Ross never divorced, and she makes her final appearance in season seven.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Anita Barone played Carol only in "The One with the Sonogram at the End," and Jane Sibbett took over the role for every appearance after that. Creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane based Carol and Susan on close friends of theirs in New York.

"The One with the Lesbian Wedding" was one of the first mainstream portrayals of a same-sex wedding on American television, following earlier ceremonies on Roc and Roseanne, and GLAAD praised Carol and Susan as a positive portrayal of a gay couple. Jessica Hecht, who played Susan, had originally auditioned to play Monica.
