On Friends, Mike Hannigan's story runs through Phoebe Buffay (Wife), Joey Tribbiani (Accidental matchmaker), Monica Geller (Friend), Ross Geller (Friend), and Chandler Bing.
Who is Mike Hannigan?
Mike is a divorced former lawyer who walked away from his career to pursue his real love, playing piano. He comes from a wealthy, stuffy family whose old-money manners could not be further from Phoebe's free spirit.
He enters the show in season nine, when Joey and Phoebe agree to set each other up on blind dates. Joey forgets to find someone, shouts the name Mike in Central Perk, and picks the stranger who answers. The lie falls apart, but Phoebe and Mike hit it off anyway.
Personality and comedy
Mike is the calm, dry counterweight to Phoebe. He meets her oddest ideas with good humor rather than confusion, and he is happy to play along, whether that means matching her strangeness or gently calling it out.
The best example comes after their wedding, when Phoebe legally changes her name to something absurd. Instead of arguing, Mike changes his own name to Crap Bag to prove his point, and Phoebe immediately gets the message.
Key storylines
Mike and Phoebe get serious quickly in season nine. She meets his disapproving parents, they move in together, and then they break up because Mike, burned by his divorce, does not want to marry again. Phoebe starts dating her old flame David, but at the end of the season Monica convinces Mike to fly to Barbados, where both men propose and Phoebe chooses Mike, though she tells him she does not need a ring yet.
In season ten Mike tries to propose on the big screen at a sports game, then gets it right at a restaurant. Their wedding is thrown into chaos by a blizzard, so they marry in the snow on the street outside, with Joey officiating and the friends gathered around them.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Paul Rudd joined Friends for its last two seasons. He was already known from films like Clueless and went on to a major movie career, which makes his Friends role a favorite bit of trivia for fans.
Mike gave Phoebe, the character who had the hardest life of the six, a stable and happy ending. In the finale the two are settled together and hinting at plans to start a family.
