Dr. Richard Burke is the older man who sweeps Monica off her feet in season two, a divorced eye doctor and longtime friend of her parents. Played by Tom Selleck, he is charming, steady, and genuinely in love with her, which makes their breakup one of the show's most bittersweet.

On Friends, Richard Burke's story runs through Monica Geller (Ex-girlfriend), Chandler Bing (Romantic rival), Ross Geller (Monica's brother), Joey Tribbiani (Friend), and Phoebe Buffay.

Who is Richard Burke?

Richard is an ophthalmologist and a close friend of Jack Geller, Monica and Ross's father, which means Monica has known him since she was a child. He is divorced with grown children and even a grandchild, and he is 21 years older than Monica.

He meets adult Monica when she caters an event for him, and the attraction is instant on both sides. After some initial awkwardness, including Ross's discomfort and a very tense dinner with her parents, the two settle into a serious, loving relationship.

Personality and comedy

Richard is the rare Friends boyfriend who is not a joke. He is confident, mature, and kind, and the comedy around him usually comes from everyone else's reactions, whether it is the Gellers learning about the relationship or Chandler and Joey clearly idolizing him.

Tom Selleck plays him with easy charm and a gentle, self-aware humor about his age. That warmth makes him a believable match for Monica, and it is why his later appearances carry real weight for her.

Key storylines

At the end of season two, Monica realizes she wants children and Richard does not want to start over as a father, and they break up while still in love. In season three they briefly try to be just friends before admitting the same problem still stands between them.

Richard's biggest moment comes years later in season six, just as Chandler is secretly planning to propose to Monica. Richard runs into them at a restaurant, then tells Monica he still loves her and now wants to marry her and have children. When Chandler comes to confront him, Richard steps aside and encourages him to go after Monica, clearing the way for their engagement.

Tom Selleck's casting was a big deal for the young show. His entrances in season two drew such loud screaming and applause from the studio audience that they had to be refilmed after the audience left.

Selleck earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in 2000 for "The One with the Proposal." In 2004 The Seattle Times ranked Richard the third-best guest character in Friends history.
