Monica Geller is the group's host, cook, and unofficial mother hen, keeping her purple-walled apartment spotless and her friends well fed. Played by Courteney Cox, she is driven, controlling, and deeply loving, and her relationship with Chandler grows into the show's happiest marriage.
On Friends, Monica Geller's story runs through Chandler Bing (Husband), Ross Geller (Brother), Rachel Green (Best Friend and Roommate), Richard Burke (Ex-boyfriend), Phoebe Buffay (Former Roommate), and Joey Tribbiani (Neighbor).
Who is Monica Geller?
Monica is Ross's younger sister and Rachel's high school best friend, and when Rachel runs out on her wedding, Monica takes her in as a roommate. Her apartment, across the hall from Chandler and Joey's, is where much of the series takes place.
She is a professional chef, and her career has real ups and downs. She works at a restaurant called Iridium early on, ends up waiting tables in a retro diner in a blond wig and fake breasts when money gets tight, becomes head chef at Alessandro's in season four, and later runs the kitchen at a restaurant called Javu.
Personality and comedy
Monica's comedy comes from her intensity. She is obsessively tidy, wildly competitive at everything from football to board games, and unable to leave a mess or a challenge alone. When she spots a mystery light switch in her apartment, she cannot rest until she figures out what it does.
Under the perfectionism is a lifelong need for approval, especially from her mother, who always seemed to favor Ross. Flashbacks reveal that Monica was overweight as a teenager, and the show treats "Fat Monica" as a running joke while also showing how hard Monica worked to change her life.
Key storylines
In season two Monica dates Richard Burke, an ophthalmologist and old friend of her parents who is 21 years older than she is. They are deeply in love but split because he does not want more children. Her biggest romance starts in London in the season four finale, when she and Chandler spend the night together after Ross's wedding.
Monica and Chandler keep their relationship secret until the whole group finds out in season five. In season six, after Chandler fakes a lack of interest in marriage to keep his plan a surprise, Monica sets out to propose to him by candlelight; when she gets too emotional to finish, he proposes instead. They marry at the end of season seven. After learning they cannot conceive, they adopt, and in the finale their birth mother has twins, Jack and Erica.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Courteney Cox was initially considered for Rachel but asked to play Monica instead, believing the character suited her. She was the only one of the six main cast members never nominated for an Emmy during the show's run, an omission critics have often called unfair.
Monica's apartment, with its purple walls and frame around the peephole, became one of the most recognizable sets in television. Her marriage to Chandler gave the later seasons their emotional anchor, a lasting romance between two people who started out as close friends.
