Chandler Bing from Friends: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Chandler Bing?

Chandler is Ross's college roommate and best friend, and he lives across the hall from Monica with Joey, who moved in after Chandler's previous roommate, Kip, moved out before the series began. His job in "statistical analysis and data reconfiguration" pays well, but none of his friends can say exactly what he does.

His childhood explains a lot about him. His parents announced their divorce over Thanksgiving dinner when he was a boy, which left him hating the holiday and wary of commitment. His mother is a famous romance novelist and his father headlines a drag show in Las Vegas, and Chandler has a joke ready for every part of it.

Personality and comedy

Sarcasm is Chandler's defense mechanism, and Matthew Perry's delivery made it the show's signature rhythm. His habit of stressing the wrong word in a sentence, as in asking whether he could be any more of something, became one of the most imitated things about the show.

Under the jokes he is insecure and eager to be liked, which makes him a loyal friend. He pays Joey's rent for years without complaint, and his friendship with Joey, complete with matching recliners, a pet chick and duck, and a foosball table, is one of the warmest pairings in the series.

Key storylines

Chandler's early love life is a parade of bad luck and Janice, his loud, laughing on-and-off girlfriend. In season four he betrays Joey by kissing Joey's girlfriend Kathy, then spends Thanksgiving inside a wooden box as penance. At the end of that season he and Monica sleep together in London after Ross's wedding, and their secret relationship becomes one of season five's best running stories.

Chandler's fake indifference to marriage, meant to surprise Monica, nearly costs him the proposal in season six, but they get engaged and marry at the end of season seven. In season nine he quits his job after accidentally agreeing to a transfer to Tulsa and starts over as a junior advertising copywriter. In the finale he and Monica adopt newborn twins, Jack and Erica, and move to the suburbs.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Matthew Perry played Chandler for all ten seasons and earned an Emmy nomination for the role. Chandler's phrasing and timing became a cultural reference point, and his one-liners are still among the most quoted lines from the show.

Perry died in October 2023 at age 54. Fans and his castmates paid tribute to him as the comic heart of Friends, and Chandler remains the character many viewers quote first when they quote the show.
