Janice is the girlfriend Chandler can never quite escape, a big-haired New Yorker with a laugh you can hear across Central Perk. Played by Maggie Wheeler, she is cheerful, oblivious, and delighted to see everyone, which is exactly what makes the friends dread her arrivals.

On Friends, Janice's story runs through Chandler Bing (Ex-boyfriend), Joey Tribbiani (Biggest critic), Ross Geller (Brief fling), Monica Geller (Chandler's wife), and Rachel Green (Labor room neighbor).

Who is Janice?

Janice is Chandler's on-and-off girlfriend in the early seasons and a running gag for the rest of the show. She first appears in season one when Chandler tries, and badly fails, to break up with her, and she keeps coming back whenever he is lonely or unlucky.

Born Janice Hosenstein, she marries Gary Litman, the owner of a mattress store, divorces him, and later marries a man named Sid Goralnik. Somewhere along the way she has children of her own, including a son born in the same hospital room where Rachel gives birth to Emma.

Personality and comedy

Janice is a pure sound gag and an affectionate one. Her nasal voice, thick New York accent, and rapid-fire laugh became instantly recognizable, and her drawn-out three-word greeting was her calling card nearly every time she walked into a scene. The laugh reportedly began as an unplanned slip by Maggie Wheeler while rehearsing her first episode.

The joke is that Janice genuinely likes the gang and has no idea how much they want to avoid her. Joey in particular can barely stand her, while Chandler swings between finding her unbearable and falling for her all over again.

Key storylines

In season two Chandler arranges to meet a mystery woman he has been chatting with online, and she turns out to be Janice, newly separated from her husband. They fall back in love, and Chandler even stops finding her annoying, until Joey sees her kissing her ex-husband in season three. Chandler ends things so she can try to save her marriage.

After that Janice pops up about once a season. Chandler pretends to move to Yemen to get away from her, Ross has a short, disastrous fling with her, she tries to invite herself to Monica and Chandler's wedding, and she shows up next to Rachel in the delivery room. In season ten she nearly buys the house next door to Monica and Chandler's new home, until Chandler talks her out of it.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Janice is one of the few supporting characters to appear in every season of Friends, alongside Gunther and Ross and Monica's parents. In 2004 The Seattle Times ranked her the best guest character in the show's history.

Wheeler turned a handful of scenes per season into one of the most recognizable performances on the show, proof that a recurring guest with the right voice and timing can be as memorable as the main cast.
