On Friends, Phoebe Buffay's story runs through Mike Hannigan (Husband), Monica Geller (Former Roommate), Rachel Green (Friend), Joey Tribbiani (Friend), Ross Geller (Friend), and Chandler Bing (Friend).

Phoebe Buffay from Friends: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Phoebe Buffay?

Phoebe is Monica's former roommate and the friend who seems to know a little about everything, from auras to street life. The woman who raised her died when Phoebe was about 14, her father had walked out years earlier, and she spent part of her youth living on the streets, stories she tells casually enough to shock everyone around her.

She works as a massage therapist and plays guitar and sings her own strange, heartfelt songs at Central Perk. Over the series she reconnects with her family, meeting her half-brother, Frank Jr., and her birth mother, while keeping a prickly distance from her identical twin sister, Ursula.

Personality and comedy

Phoebe's comedy comes from her completely original logic. She believes in spirits and reincarnation, argues with Ross about whether evolution and gravity are real, and invents aliases on the spot, like the unforgettable Regina Phalange. Her songs, especially "Smelly Cat," turned into some of the show's most quoted bits.

Beneath the quirks she is the most blunt and emotionally clear-eyed of the six. Phoebe often sees what is going on before anyone else does, and she is the friend who pushes Ross and Rachel toward each other again and again.

Key storylines

In season four Phoebe agrees to be a surrogate for her half-brother, Frank Jr., and his much older wife, Alice. The embryos take, and early in season five she gives birth to triplets, two boys and a girl, one of whom is named Chandler.

In season nine Joey sets Phoebe up on a blind date with a stranger named Mike Hannigan, and the two fall for each other. After a breakup over marriage and a final choice between Mike and her old flame David in Barbados, she marries Mike in season ten in a snowy street ceremony officiated by Joey.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Lisa Kudrow also played Ursula Buffay on the sitcom Mad About You, and Friends folded that character into Phoebe's story as her twin sister. Kudrow won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the role, one of only two Friends stars to win an acting Emmy.

"Smelly Cat" became the most famous song from the show. Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, who guest-starred in the episode where Phoebe first plays it, is credited as a co-writer, and the song still pops up at fan events and on the Friends reunion special.
